Handgun Ballistics

Though testing parameters vary, published ballistics information can provide a rough idea how a certain cartridge will perform. This information is freely available from the manufacturers. I have simply gathered it here for convenience. The following list is not comprehensive or thorough, but it does represent a sampling of a wide variety of handgun cartridges.

.22 Long Rifle

The .22 LR is a small, inexpensive rimfire cartridge. It is widely used for recreation, competition, and pest control, making it probably the most popular cartridge in the world. Many revolvers, pistols, carbines, and rifles have been chambered for .22 Long Rifle.

.25 ACP (6.35×16mm)

The .25 ACP is one of several cartridges originally designed for autoloading Colt pistols. Before improved materials and manufacturing made compact handguns chambered in more potent calibers a possibility, it was also one of the few cartridges suitable for such “pocket guns.” Col. J. D. Cooper famously wrote that shooting someone with a .25 would probably make him very angry, if he noticed.

.357 Magnum (9×33mm rimmed)

So called because it is longer than the .38 Special cartridge from which it was developed, the .357 Magnum has earned a reputation as a “man stopper.” However, its muzzle blast and strong recoil can make shooting it less than pleasant, especially from light-weight revolvers. Even those who swear by the .357 Magnum often prefer to practice with gentler .38 Specials.

.357 SIG (9×22mm)

Developed in cooperation with Federal Cartridge Company and named for the Swiss Industrial Group, the .357 SIG is a bottlenecked cartridge intended to bring “magnum” performance to semi-automatic pistols. Though it has yet to catch on widely, several major manufacturers chamber handguns for this cartridge.

.38 Special (9×29mm rimmed)

The .38 Special began its history as a black-powder revolver cartridge but has most often been loaded with smokeless powder. It was the most common chambering in American law-enforcement sidearms for many decades. Though often considered somewhat underpowered by today’s standards, the .38 Special remains a popular cartridge for recreational shooting and for self-defense.

.40 Smith & Wesson (10×22mm)

Developed to meet FBI specifications, the .40 S&W is a shortened version of the 10×25mm cartridge. It is continuing to gain popularity in law-enforcement circles, but some shooters still dismiss it as a compromise cartridge.

.45 ACP (11.43×23mm)

Thanks in no small part to its association with the long-lived U.S. m1911 pistols, the .45 ACP is probably the most American of handgun cartridges. Its “stopping power” is often exaggerated, but it is still extremely popular with defensive and competitive shooters alike. Over the years, a wide variety of firearms (including pistols, revolvers, carbines, and submachine guns) has been chambered for the .45 ACP.

9mm Makarov (9×18mm)

When compact, inexpensive Makarov pistols reached the U.S. surplus market, they quickly became popular among handgun enthusiasts and concealed-carry licensees. The 9×18mm cartridge developed for this pistol falls between .380 ACP and .38 Special in performance.

Bullet weights are in grains. Figures for velocity and energy are given in feet per second (FPS) and foot pounds (ft. lbs.) respectively. Bullet types are defined below.
EFMJ
Expanding Full Metal Jacket
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. In this case, the bullet is given a polymer tip and then jacketed with metal.
ExP
Expanding Point
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. In this case, a hollow-point bullet is filled with a polymer sphere.
FMJ
Full Metal Jacket
A bullet covered by a jacket of copper (or similar material) on its front and sides. Compared to bare lead, this jacket allows for higher muzzle velocities and reduces fouling in the bore.
JHP
Jacketed Hollow Point
A jacketed bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. This is facilitated by a hollow in the nose of the bullet, wherein hydraulic pressure upon impact causes the expansion.
JSP
Jacketed Soft Point
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. The bullet is jacketed except for its flat nose, which is bare lead.
LHP
Lead Hollow Point
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. This is facilitated by a hollow in the nose of the bullet, wherein hydraulic pressure upon impact causes the expansion.
LRN
Lead Round Nose
A lead bullet with a rounded nose. These bullets are inexpensive and reliable but may lead to excessive fouling in the bore of the firearm.
LSP
Lead Soft Point
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. Combined with the bullet’s flat nose, the softness of bare lead increases the likelihood of expansion.
SJHP
Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point
A bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing tissue damage but reducing penetration. This design combines some of the benefits of soft lead, hollow points, and metal jackets.
TMJ
Total Metal Jacket
A bullet completely encased within a metal jacket. Such bullets are designed to eliminate airborne lead exposure, especially on indoor shooting ranges.
